The press conference organized on the occasion of the 29th edition of the Sibiu International Theater Festival took place today in Sibiu.
The event was organized in hybrid format: live, in the Great Hall of TNRS, with the physical presence of journalists, and broadcast online, on the Facebook page of the Festival and on the FITS YouTube account.
The host of the event, Constantin Chiriac, President of FITS and Director General of TNRS, announced the new, updated figures of the Festival: 768 events that will take place in 80 venues, with over 3500 participants from 75 countries.
During the press conference, it was announced for the first time that this year’s edition of FITS received the High Patronage of the President of Romania and the High Patronage of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, an unprecedented distinction worldwide.
„We have given the High Patronage to the 2022 edition of the Sibiu International Theater Festival with the conviction that the organizers and artists involved will demonstrate how relevant are the great humanistic values that our European history has left us, in a serious and complicated context such as which we are going through today.
In Sibiu – the old Hermannstadt, the modern, ephemeral but so strong fortress of the beauty and relevance of theatrical art will rise again. The Festival scene will be, as in previous editions, wide open to the diversity of cultural identities that make the world we live in so rich! In addition, FITS 2022 will celebrate this year the partnership between Romania and Germany, a major milestone in the European history of our country in the last 30 years, but also an important cultural bridge to the global affirmation of our common heritage „, he transmitted, in the message for FITS, the President of Romania, Klaus-Werner Iohannis.
„It gives me great pleasure and honor to take over, together with the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, the patronage of this year’s edition of the Sibiu Theater Festival – one of the most recognized theater festivals in all of Europe.
The festival takes place at a special time: we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Romanian-German Friendship Treaty, the foundation of our close political, economic and cultural relations in a united Europe. The friendship that binds our countries is a much older one, a fact confirmed by the program of my recent visit to Bucharest. Romania’s first diplomatic mission in Germany was opened 150 years ago – another event we are celebrating this year. Almost no other place represents this friendship and deep ties better than Sibiu, ”said Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at FITS.
Constantin Chiriac presented the messages sent during the conference by the representatives of the most important institutional partners of this edition, organizers and co-organizers. It also reviewed, with short presentations for each, the main seasons and events associated with FITS. Thus, this edition has 13 seasons (France, Switzerland, China, Japan, Israel, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Great Britain, Italy, Poland, Spain, NATO special season) and a series of other associated events: Performance Exchange, Therme Forum, Visual Arts Platform, Theater Universities Festival. The FITS 2022 program includes 386 special events, 19 book launches, 7 reading shows, 129 exhibition events.
